I was taught to play piano and Hammond organ by
my grandmother, Lillian "Tommy " Fuller, as a child.
She had played silent movie houses, Saturday night dances
and Sunday morning church services.
During High School (1971) on the Mesabi Iron Range, I helped form a 10-piece horn band
in called
Loadstone.
In 1974, I moved from da Range to NordEast Minneapolis. Living on the corner of 29th St. N. and Colfax Ave, our duplex became the band house for the group Mandala. This band included Terry Longtin (guitar), Bob Hachey(drums), Gary Snow (bass) and myself. Over the years, I've been fortunate to perform at numerous nightclubs, concerts, musical shows, and churches with a variety of musicians. After High School, I bought my own Hammond B-3 with 2 Leslies. In my younger days, I traveled heavy. Not only did I carry the B-3 and two 122 Leslies, but also a 1910 Ivers and Pond upright piano, and a suitcase Fender Rhodes. Let me take time out, right now, to thank all those who help me tote this stuff. Check out the Loadstone website link above, to see pictures of us moving all this stuff. In the Twin Cities area, I've had the pleasure to "sit-in" with Big Walter Smith & the Groove Merchants, The Solid Senders, Joe T. Cook and the Longshots, Lonnie Knight, Cool Disposition, Renee' Austin, High and Mighty, Lamont Cranston, Hydraulic Jack and the Lifters, Friends of Yoder, and Spots on Dice. Some of my favorite piano players include Johnnie Johnson, Prof. Longhair, Charles Brown, Dr. John, Thelonious Monk, Jay McShann, and Ruben Gonzalez. My list of Hammond players includes Charles Earland, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy McGriff and of course, Jimmy Smith. |
